Family Advent Devotions: Week 2

Have someone light a candle.

Reader:

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. The light
shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”

Everyone:

Oh come, let us adore him!

[Sing "Silent Night"]

Have someone read Luke 2:1-7 (NIrV):

In those days, Caesar Augustus made a law. It required that a list be made of everyone in the whole Roman world. It was the first time a list was made of the people while Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone went to their own town to be listed.

So Joseph went also. He went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea. That is where Bethlehem, the town of David, was. Joseph went there because he belonged to the family line of David. He went there with Mary to be listed. Mary was engaged to him. She was expecting a baby. While Joseph and Mary were there, the time came for the child to be born. She gave birth to her first baby. It was a boy. She wrapped him in large strips of cloth. Then she placed him in a manger. That’s because there was no guest room where they could stay.

Discussion Questions:

  • Mary was very pregnant when they took this trip. How do you think she felt about travelling? (Ask mom what she thinks!)

  • The prophet Micah predicted that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem 700 years before it happened (Micah 5:2)! How did he know?

  • Do you think it helped Mary to know that God already knew what was going to happen? Does God know what’s going to happen to you?

Family Prayers:
•    Thank God for takinf care of your family this year.
•    Have each person pray for another member in the family.
•    Pray for people who don't know Jesus.
•    If you have received any Christmas cards this week, pull them out and pray for those families.

Reader:

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Everyone:

Amen!

Give each other a hug or kiss, or however you show affection in your family.
