Baptism & the Lord's Supper

When Paul wrote a letter to a very sick church in Corinth, he diagnosed them with an eating disorder: they had been eating the Lord's Supper in the wrong way. Why would a simple ceremony have such serious consequences? How could human actions like baptism and communion have such serious spiritual consequences?
