Choosing/Chosen

Why did the disciples choose to follow Jesus--a man they didn't know or understand, who was always surrounded by people they didn't like? Jesus said it was because he chose them first. What does that mean? Were only some people chosen by Jesus? Or was there something about being chosen by Jesus that only some people understood?
